The PCOI Story

The idea of a Philippine College of Oral Implantologists (PCOI) came at a time when the Philippines decided to bid for the hosting of the 12th International Congress of Oral Implantologists Asia-Pacific Section (ICOI-APS) Congress in 2008.

With this as a backdrop, it became increasingly clear that there was a pressing need to unite all implant groups not only for the congress but also to better pursue the common vision and mission espoused by all concerned.

The root of all these took final form and shape at the ICOI World Congress XXIV and the 10th PCOI AP-Section Congress held in Taipei from October 18 to 22, 2006.

Impressed and fully convinced of the need to bring a world class event to the Philippines, where there is a huge demand for implants, implant education and research, members of the Philippine delegation namely, Drs. Eliezer B. Blanes, president of the Philippine Dental Association (PDA); Joseph D. Lim, associate dean of the University of the East College of Dentistry; Benjamin F. Racela, president of the Philippine Society of Osseointegration; Jose Teofilo R. Manuel Jr., Jay Hansel I. Tabije, Reynaldo M. Villacorta II and Jennifer A. Bautista, decided to bring the congress to Manila.

Fueled by the strong encouragement and initiatives of Dr. Blanes and other members of the Philippine delegation, Dr. Lim, then a member of the ICOI Asia Pacific Section Board of Directors, was able to win crucial support and succeeded in ensuring the winning bid for the Philippines.

Preparations were eventually made for the first ever ICOI Congress in the Philippines. Finally, five groups joined hands to form the PCOI, namely, the College of Oral Implantology of the Philippines, the Philippine Society of Osseintegration, Philippine Academy of Implant Dentistry, The Foundation for Oral Implant Research of the Philippines Inc. and the Bicon-Straumann Group.

With the acceptance of the application of the PCOI by the Securities and Exchange Commission last September 24, 2007 and the endorsement of the Professional Regulation Commission, the PCOI moved from a dream to a reality.

Unfortunately, the very conference if fought for was cancelled. Unperturbed and unfazed with these development, the committed men and women of PCOI continued to operationalize the mission, vision and objectives of the organization.

PCOI continued their planned projects of bringing in speakers and lecturers from abroad to provide continuing education to interested dentists in Manila and in the provinces like Baguio and Iloilo. It did charity work by giving free implants to deserving patients. Members of PCOI likewise attended seminars outside the country to continuously update themselves on the latest in implant dentistry.

PCOI has also partnered with teaching intitutions like the National University - Philippines and Wei-han Dental Continuing Education Center of Taiwan and the New York University, College of Dentistry. These partnerships have also resulted in the awarding of a full scholarship worth Php1.5 Million to a deserving Filipino dental student to a prestigious Taiwan University, the Chung Shan Medical University.

Finally, PCOI has also affiliated itself with the Asia-Pacific Academy of Implant Dentistry. This gives its members the opportunity to be a fellow and diplomate in the field of Oral Implantology of a recognized international organization.

Today, we are now given the honor of hosting the 1st Asia Pacific Academy of Implant Dentistry. An honor that will forever be treasured and will further provide the true essence in everything PCOI has set itself to do and accomplish.
